Day 4 - May 5, 2011
Today was the second day of profiling transects through the tornado path. The focus today was primarily on the tornado track through the Northeast side of Tuscaloosa. Members of the team also continued collecting range and true-color data of relevant affected areas. This data is expected to allow for a reliable post-assessment of the tornado FE category based on the level of damage and barking.
The team split up into three separate groups and assessed the remaining transects through the tornado path. One notable observation was the performance of an apartment complex built in 2010. Though newly constructed at a somewhat better quality than other buildings examined in previous days, the damage was still devastating to the extent that life safety was even hazarded.

Members of the team have also been collecting range and true-color data of relevant affected areas. This data is expected to allow for a reliable post-assessment of the tornado FE category based on the level of damage and de-barking. It will also allow for a more thorough understanding of the tornado vortex behavior along sections perpendicular to the passage of the tornado. The imaging creates a 3D model of an area so that further analysis, including accurate measurements, can be done at a later date off-site. A snapshot of the model is shown below, prior to the true-coloring being added.

Transects were completed and the map below used GIS to plot the tracks we have follow from May 2nd through May 5th in assessing the damage.
